THOU ART THE POTTER; WE ARE THE CLAY.

Dawn reflections….                                                                                               7/27/10

I’ve spent the last month pouring through boxes, looking at lots of pictures, in search for pictures of my dad. As I would come across pictures of him, I’d reminisce about the experience that was captured by that picture. I’ve remembered good times as well as not-so-good times. I’ve spent a great deal of time reflecting on the whole of my relationship with my dad. And I’ve wondered if I left anything unsaid, undone or unresolved in my relationship with him. You may have done the same following the death of a loved one.

This has caused me to do a lot of reflecting on my relationships, with other people as well as with God. If I were to die today, is there anything I would have left unsaid? Undone? Unresolved? With anyone? Would God say to me, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”? I’ve thought about the times when I had the opportunity to talk about my faith with someone but didn’t do it. I’ve thought about the times when I was unloving, unforgiving, or just not very Christ-like in the way I treated someone. I’ve thought about the times when I hurt someone by something I said or did (or didn’t do). I’ve asked and received God’s forgiveness. Will I need to ask for God’s forgiveness again? Absolutely, without a doubt. Over and over. But my hope is in this gracious God we worship who is all about relationships and forgiveness.

My prayer is that you are right with God; and with your family and friends, too. That you haven’t left something unsaid, undone, or unresolved in your life. Is there something you need to say to someone, to do for someone or to resolve with someone in order to right a relationship? How about with God? Is there something you need to say, do or resolve with God? Trust that God is always ready to hear our confessions and extend forgiveness, to give us direction for our life, to help us right the broken relationships in our life, and to welcome us back when we’ve strayed away. May you truly know “the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding” that “will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Phil. 4:7)

So very grateful for God’s grace,

Dawn

DISCIPLES WOMEN’S NEWS

Quadrennial Assembly

Just back from Quadrennial Assembly in Greensboro, North Carolina…What an AWESOME experience it was for me. It is hard for me to put in words what touched me the most, because there were so many high points during the week.

I want this article to serve as a thank you to the women who helped establish a special CWF Quadrennial account years ago. This account has covered the registration fees for quite a few women over the years. It also serves as a reminder to me of how important it is to continue adding to this account for future QA’s.

I knew the music would be one of my most favorite parts of QA, and I was not disappointed. One of my favorite musical presentations, which could have been titled “The Faces of Joy”, came from the Camille Gaylord Class Chimers, an adult special needs group. It was an emotional experience just sharing the performance with them.

Tops on my “QA To Do List” was to experience and participate in a gospel service, and participate I did! If we were able to bottle the energy that came from that 2-hour session, our energy crisis would be solved. It is a worship style that would be unfamiliar to most of us here at FCC Burnet, but worship it was! I even learned a couple of phrases that I may try on Dawn sometime. “Talk to me, Sister…Say it again!”

Of course, I was blessed to hear great preachers, Bible study, workshops, and the opportunity to meet sisters from all over the world. One relaxing “unscheduled workshop” occurred in the pool—a beautiful afternoon, a group of Disciples Women, and conversations/discussions on a number of topics. It could have been called “Sharing with your Sisters.”

The “Bras for a Cause” event was an unqualified success, raising over $4000 with over 130 entries. Our “Bluebonnet Girls” did not make it into the top 10, but I was excited to see a large full color picture of them on the front page of the Greensboro News and Record. Thanks again to Sharon Tippie for doing such great work on the “Girls”. The creativity and thought put into all of these creations made this a very successful fundraiser for Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Research Foundation, and was great fun for everyone who entered and supported the exhibit.

I could go on and on, but I won’t. It was an awesome experience for me, one that I will not soon forget. Remember, QA 2014 is only four years away. I challenge you to start saving, holding fundraisers, and encouraging the women in the church to attend the next QA. Time and location yet to be determined.

For a more complete article and lots of statistics, be sure to read the article in the August Chalice.

DISCIPLES MEN NEWS

It won’t be long before the men start enjoying our fellowship breakfast meetings and discuss projects to work on. We had a mini-workday on Thursday, July 22nd. You may have already noticed that the tree on the NW corner of the building is gone. Along with the removal of the tree we mowed the playground, repaired the fence, and mowed between the building and fence on north side of the property.

There seems to be an urgent need of work to be done in Gonzales and we will be working on a couple of days to go down and see if we can help. If any of the men are interested contact me or Chuck and we will sign you up.

The Regional Men’s retreat is coming up September the 17th, so start planning to attend and enjoy the weekend with other Disciple’s Men.

It is a joy to serve with men of this congregation doing God’s work.

to meet in August, we are taking a vacation. Come join us again the 3rd Friday in September.

Dear Church,
Thank you for allowing me to have this time away so that Ron and I could be with my dad and my family during Dad’s last days of life on earth.

These have been special days of being family together as we cared for Dad, sat with him and said our goodbyes.

I appreciate your prayers, calls, cards and the beautiful spray of flowers that you sent for Dad’s funeral. It is especially comforting to be church with you and to have Christian hope that Dad is at peace in God’s eternal care.

With gratitude,
         Dawn

Another Thanks….

We received this card from Kristy Moss, for whom a bake sale was held in June, to help her with back surgery expenses:

“I can’t express how very blessed I am for all the wonderful people from the First Christian Church for all their support in helping with the bake sale and for all your prayers. Thank you so very much. God bless!”

Love,
         Kristy Moss

Pictures
By: G. G. Smith

An old cowboy and a friend
Went into an art museum one day.
They looked at all the beautiful art
That they had there on display.

Paintings from all over the world
By the "masters", so they say
Michelangelo, De Vinci, Picasso,
Renoir, Van Gogh, and Monet.

After they had left the art behind,
His friend said, "Now you've seen the best."
The cowboy just shook his head
As he wasn’t really so impressed.

The cowboy said in his Texas drawl,
You must never look around
For every day that I have lived,
A beautiful picture I have found.

How about the live oak trees
Before the leaves begin to fall,
Or the rain clouds in the west
Or a mountain standing tall.

A field of blue bonnets in the sun,
That white tail crossing the trail,
That clear stream running full,
Or that covey of quail.

So take a look around, my friend.
There are pictures everywhere.
They were put here for you and me
And all the world to share.

The paintings you just showed me
Were very pretty, I recall.
I guess I am just used to real ones
By the Master of us all.

Christianity and World Religions

We live in a diverse and changing world. Around the globe and in our own neighborhoods, we live and work with people of other faiths. What do they believe? How, as Christians, should we respond to them? How can we learn about their faiths and share our own faith with respect, building bridges of mutual understanding?
Chuck Orr will facilitate a class that will focus for six weeks on the subject of “Christianity and World Religions: Wrestling With Questions People Ask,” in the hope that we will come to a better understanding of our world, a greater appreciation of the differences among religious people, and a stronger grasp of our own faith. This six-week study will begin on Sunday, August 15, at 9:30 AM in the parlor.
The study is based on a video series of the same name featuring the Reverend Adam Hamilton, founding pastor of the Church of the Resurrection in Leawood, Kansas. During the original series, the Church of the Resurrection substantially increased the number of people attending worship.
Come and learn more about Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, Judaism, and Christianity. This study is open to both youth and adults.
