Dawn reflections….                                                                                   1/28/08

What a blessed time it was at Chi Rho Mid-winter camp this past weekend! I took 5 of our middle school girls on their first church camp experience and I watched them be transformed from beginner campers into seasoned campers. They learned how to make communion bread; they learned signing to some Christian songs; they made quilts for those in need of clothing (there’s a sermon there!); they performed in the talent show; they watched movies and worshipped and went on a hike and met many other campers from around the Bluebonnet Area. The camp theme was “Preach the Gospel Always (and use words, if necessary)”, so we learned that there are many ways to spread the gospel message without even saying a word. Just ask Ashley, Mandee, Victoria, Mary, or Savanna about their weekend. They have a lot to teach us about sharing the good news of Jesus Christ with others! Thank you church for your support of our youth. Also, many thanks to the Hostetters for the use of their Expedition and to everyone who sponsored these girls so they could have this extraordinary camp experience.
Lent is here. It is a time of deep personal reflection, a time of fasting from the things that distract us from our commitment to Christ, and a time of acknowledging our need for God. I invite you to be an active part of this Lenten season by attending the Ash Wednesday service and one of the Bible studies as we journey the 40 days to Easter. How is your need for Jesus more real today? What do you need to give up for Lent in order to focus more on Jesus’ will for your life? Consider replacing what you give up with something that brings you closer to God. For example, if you believe that you spend too much time watching TV, you might consider replacing that time with prayer or study or something else that enhances your spiritual growth. We are on this journey together. We are here for one another. So, together let’s spread the gospel and grow the Body of Christ by being intentional about our commitment to God. See you “On the Road Again”. I’ll be praying for you.
A companion for the journey,
Dawn

WOMEN’S NEWS

The Burnet Fellowship of Church Women met here and enjoyed a wonderful program of music presented by the Bluebonnet Chorale. Thank you, ladies, who provided cobbler and ice cream and a warm welcome to our friends.

CHRISTIAN MEN'S FELLOWSHIP

CMF will meet for breakfast on Saturday, Feb 23 at 8:00 am.
The Men’s Retreat at Disciple Oaks Retreat Center, set for Feb 15 and 16, will feature keynoter Rev. Dr. Bryan Feille of Brite Divinity School and a former student minister in Burnet. Bluebonnet and Coastal Plains Area men meet jointly for this annual retreat. Rev. Rick Lynn will lead the singing. What a powerful combination of leaders for music and the Word! The CMF group has agreed to pay the registration fee for anyone who will attend. Registration forms are available on the table in our Gathering Area and should be turned in by February 3rd so the forms can be mailed in time.

Did you see the picture of Pastor Dawn with John Callison, Leslie Green and Ernie Spiekermann in the December issue of THE CHALICE? What a marvelous array of groceries in our Gathering Area! Thank you, Marilyn and kids for getting us fired up to provide food for LACare!

Another opportunity to serve is offered by our youth…………

The Youth would like to invite you to participate in helping children in our community. The Hill Country Children’s Advocacy Center has provided us with a Wish List of items to be used specifically to help the abused children they serve in Burnet County. Items include snacks, art supplies, a stethoscope and a doll house. A complete list will be inserted in the February 3 and 10 bulletins. We will accept contributions through Sunday, February 17. Thank you for your support!
The Youth will participate in leading worship on Sunday, February 10.
Registration forms for the CYF Spring Event are available in the office. Rev. David Green of San Marcos will keynote the event set for February 29 through March 2.

The Ash Wednesday service, Feb 6 at 7:00 will mark the beginning of our preparation for Easter. At the service we’ll have the opportunity to receive a cross of ashes on our foreheads and to share in communion. Bible study opportunities are offered Thursdays at 3 and Sundays at 6, beginning Feb 7. “On the Road Again” by James Moore is the study guide and costs $6.00. Devotional booklets will be available for everyone (at no cost) Feb 3. One is especially prepared for “kids and their families.” Please remember to take one and commit to daily devotional reading this Lenten season. The sanctuary will be open all day on Mondays during Lent for prayer. Pastor Dawn will be available for anyone who wants prayer with a minister during the noon hour.

Singers needed! You may have noticed some empty chairs in the choir area. We’d love to fill them with people who love music. Skills and training are not required! An ability to match pitch and attend practice with a smile—that’s all we ask. Come join us on Tuesday afternoons at 5:15!

Notes from the Board Meeting

What a great attendance there was at the January meeting! This writer came away from that meeting with a sense of excitement as we move into 2008. The newly elected and appointed leaders are off to a great start.
If you’ve noticed the large drop in the bank balance reported in this newsletter, Ernie reminds you that the board authorized a pay-down of $30,000 against the mortgage principal.
When you fill in the Attendance Register in worship, be sure to fill in all the appropriate blanks. Yes, the church office may have your address and may know very well that you are a member, but the visitor on your row may not know that! Remember, everything we do should be done with consideration of the person who may be visiting for the very first time.

Five, yes! Five Chi Rho youth and Pastor Dawn attended Mid-Winter Rally at Gonzales. Victoria Johnson, Mary Nedbalek, Savanna Parker, Ashley Brown and Mandee Harris spent the weekend learning different ways to “Preach the Gospel Always (and use words, if necessary)”.
