Dawn reflections….
12/21/09
As I write this article, I’m in the afterglow of our wonderful 4th Sunday of Advent activities. What a glorious day of worship and celebration! A sanctuary filled with worshipers, a Baptism, our Christmas party, the youth/children’s play (weren’t they great?!), and the conclusion of our Advent study. Whew! And it took the whole church coming together to make it all happen.
I come to the end of this year with a heart filled to the brim with gratitude: for the more than 2 years that we’ve been serving God together; for the ministry that we continue to do together to the glory of God’s kingdom; for the lives that are transformed by God’s work in and through us; for your willingness to explore new ways of being Christ’s church together; for your generous and loving spirit that is expressed in so many ways; for all your cards and gifts; for your Love Offering, not just to me but to the whole staff who faithfully give so much of themselves; for my bonus that was approved by our Board at the December meeting; for the celebration of Baptism that we witnessed last Sunday; for Ernie and Peggy and all that they’ve done and continue to do for the church; for Jerry and the 2009 Leadership Team who led us to new heights of ministry; for Judy and Susan who lead us in singing praises to God; for Debbie who joyfully treats her job as a ministry; and for all of you.
I come to the end of this year with a heart filled with gratitude. And I go into 2010 with a heart filled with that same gratitude along with excitement about all that God has in store for us, trusting in God’s continued faithfulness in guiding us to where God wants us to be.
Merry Christmas, church! And Happy New Year! I hope to see you in our home on December 30th, 4-8 pm, for our annual Open House. Be sure to pick up an invitation at church and come by for some good food and fellowship.
With grace and peace and health in the new year,
Dawn

DISCIPLES WOMEN’S NEWS
Consider this your “SAVE A DATE” card for two exciting opportunities for the women in the Southwest Region and BBA.
February 26-27, 2010—The Women’s Vision Event will be held at Community Christian Church in Richardson with Adonna Bowman, Executive Director of Disciples Women’s Ministries, leading the event. I hope that we will have a group attend this event. It will begin Friday evening at 6:30 p.m. with dinner and end Saturday afternoon by 4 p.m. Tickets will be $20 at the door, Friday evening (with meal) and Saturday 9-4 (with lunch). A hotel has been secured at a discounted rate. For hotel information, you must call and register with Andrea Gantz at 817-926-4687 or ccsw@ccsw.org.
March 6, 2010—FCC Burnet will host Adonna Bowman at our church for a shortened presentation to both the Hill Country and Town and Country Clusters. The time has not been set yet, but it will probably be a morning meeting with refreshments served, either before or after the event.
This is a wonderful opportunity for all the women in the church to come together and get excited about Women’s Ministries.
Please let me know if you are interested in attending the February meeting.

DISCIPLES MEN’S NEWS
Where did 2009 go? It seemed to pass rather quickly but on the other hand the Disciples Men group achieved most of what we set out to do. They even agreed to let me stay on as President for another year. We have a lot of opportunities coming up in 2010. There is always something to be done at the camp in Gonzales and the Area Retreat is early in the year. The Regional Retreat is in the fall and we will be working on getting more of the men to attend the two retreats. The third Saturday fellowship breakfast meetings were well attended in 2009 and we were blessed with some of the women of the Church attending once in a while.
I am very much looking forward to kicking off 2010 with work on the rent property and scheduling more work on the outside of the main building. Thanks to the men that made my job an easy one in 2009 and I know that 2010 will even be better.
If there are any men in the Church that are looking for a place to serve, we have room for you.
Ron Rosignol President
A WORD FROM
THE MODERATOR…
I’m praying that 2010 will be a wonderful year in the life of our church!
The first board meeting will be January 13, 2010, at 7:00 P.M. Make a commitment to attend the board meetings this year and discover for yourself the workings of the church. I will try to keep the meetings, as Jerry did, to one hour! I am looking forward to working with each and every one of you and counting on your support, with and through Christ, in 2010.

FROM THE ELDERS
As the newly - elected Chair of the Elders, I want to begin by welcoming each of the newly - elected elders to Eldership. Your decision to accept a call to become an elder is not taken lightly by God or by our church members. Expectations run high as we enter 2010 to continue our work in the congregation and community. It is my hope that the phrase “The church has left the building” will soon clearly define our congregation. In the coming year we will focus on each Elder’s relationship with their own spiritual gifts, the collective gifts of the group, and the attitude of Elders toward gifts in our local church and in the body of Christ overall. I also believe that the Lord would have us focus on equipping the saints. Scripture is clear that we are to be equipped for service and grow in maturity. We will begin equipping ourselves for the task by attending the Elder – Deacon Retreat led by Rev. Dani Loving Cartwright, Regional Minister and President, Christian Church of the Southwest on January 23, 2010.
In Christ,
Ron Petrick
First Christian Members,

Stewardship
"Kids are never too young to make a difference," says 12-year-old Zach Bonner, a sixth-grader in Tampa, Fla. "No matter how old or how young, how rich or how poor, you can always make a difference. Whether you donate a dollar or a hundred dollars, it all adds up."
Zach began at 6, hauling his Radio Flyer through his hometown, collecting bottled water for hurricane victims. But his greatest concern, even at that age, was the plight of homeless children. At 7 he was filling backpacks with food, hygiene products, and simple toys for kids living on the street, some of whom had never had a new toy. “There are 1.3 million homeless kids in America,” says Zach. “And 13 die each day on the street.”
|
This past summer, Zach captured local and national headlines by walking 668 miles from Atlanta to Washington D.C. – the final leg of his 1,225-mile "My House to the White House" sojourn that began in Tampa two years earlier. Zach walked the walk in order to urge kids nationwide to get up from their TV sets and video games and get out and make a difference in their neighborhoods. "You're never too young to change the world," Zach enthuses. "You don't have to do a huge project; you can do small things."
Zach's message is resonating with both children and grownups nationwide – helped, no doubt, by the widespread suffering caused by today’s ailing economy – and his recent visit to Lupin Hill proves it. The students and teachers at the suburban school – led by fifth-graders calling themselves the "Zach Pack" – began preparing for the event weeks beforehand. Kids suddenly excited about (and able even to pronounce the word) philanthropy gave up their lunch hours to make dozens of hand-held signs and to paint a 15-foot-long welcome banner. For days, eager to support Zach's philanthropic efforts on behalf of homeless kids in America, they dropped their spare change into a large empty Sparkletts bottle at the front of the school.
When the big morning finally dawned, Zach and his mom were greeted with wild cheers. High-fiving, sign-toting Lupin Hill students mobbed Zach, as they escorted him to the school playground for a special assembly. The highlight came when the students themselves presented Zach with a pair of specially designed sneakers for his next philanthropy walk – an historic and physically challenging 2,500-mile trek from Tampa to Los Angeles, beginning next spring – and a $200 check for his foundation.
Zach’s core message is this: "When the spirit of a child is combined with the experience of an adult, great things can be accomplished."
What a wonderful reminder that we cannot do great things, only small things with great love. That’s the message of the hope of Christmas!
