Dawn reflections….
                                                                                                                                2/24/10
A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to attend the annual Ministers Week in Fort Worth. This is an event that I look forward to each year. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to be refreshed and renewed by this experience of attending daily lectures, workshops, worship and fellowship activities. This is a wonderful opportunity for me to be spiritually nourished before we begin our Lenten journey together each year.

This year, the lectures were especially stimulating and the worship services were revitalizing. Our own General Minister and President, Rev. Dr. Sharon Watkins, was our guest preacher. Her sermons were inspiring and challenging as we continue to struggle with our role as Christians in this world. She opened on Monday evening with a message that called us to “view the world through the lens of one”, reminding us that there is no god but the one God and there is no family but the one human family. There are many faiths, but one God; and even many denominations, but one Christianity. God is experienced and understood in different ways; yet God is far greater than any one human understanding. Diverse as we are in the world, we all belong to the one family of God.

This understanding of “oneness” was a common thread that ran through my experience of Ministers Week this year. It called me to actively remember that, because we are all members of the one family of the one God, we are all together on this journey we call life: the poor and the wealthy, the young and the not-so-young, the home-growns and the immigrants, the United States and the rest of the world, the Christians and the Jews and the Muslims and everyone else.

It makes me wonder what this world would be like if we actually viewed the world through the lens of “one”; if we truly celebrated our diversity in culture, faith, language, nationality, and on and on. There is no god but the one God and there is no family but the one human family. So, as we continue on our Lenten journey together I invite you to consider who in this one human family needs to be heard? seen? helped? included? validated? encouraged? loved?

Giving thanks to the one God for this one family,
Dawn

Daylight Savings time begins on March 14. Remember to set your clocks forward on Saturday night, and be on time for church.

DISCIPLES WOMEN’S NEWS
The next event for the women is Saturday, March 6, at 10:00 AM. Adonna Bowman, Executive Director of Disciples Women, will be here to “Pump Us Up”. Lunch will be served. For late reservations, let Marilyn know, ASAP.

Plans are being made for another “Mother, Daughter, Friend Banquet”. There is talk about a road trip to San Antonio to shop and have lunch. Stay tuned for more details about these opportunities for the women of the church.

For the readers in the church, I am suggesting that you try the following books:
  • The Shack by William Paul Young
  • The Help by Kathryn Stockett.
  • Never Say Never by Lisa Wingate
The first two will be discussed/reviewed at the BBA/LRGVD retreat in the fall and the Wingate book is just a good read, based on our recent hurricane, Katrina.

God bless y’all for hiring us and for the Christmas gift. We love y’all very much. May God bless everyone of y’all. Really thank you for letting us be part of your family.

DISCIPLES MEN NEWS
WOW!!!!! What a great time the men had cooking Valentines breakfast for the women of the church. Yes, ladies we will make it an annual affair and will do our best to make it better each year. Thanks for coming and being a part of the celebration.

Six of us just returned the 20th from our Area Retreat in Gonzales and had a great time and look forward to the Regional Retreat in Brownwood this fall. We arrived at the camp early and were able to help Dale with some repair projects with plumbing and repairing the tractor. Ernie was nominated for Minister of the Year, and Bobby was nominated for Layman of the Year and was selected as the Bluebonnet Area Layman of the Year. Bobby will be honored with the official presentation at the Regional Retreat in Brownwood. Ernie has been selected as the Minister of the Year in the past.

The weather has been so crazy this year that outside work projects have been hard to schedule, however the week of the 24th of May is our Mission trip to Jarvis to remodel nine apartment type buildings and our work day at Gonzales is coming up soon.

Remember men, the Disciples Men’s Group is open to all the men of the church and we would like to have you join and enjoy the fellowship and activities of our group.

I was VP of the Area Men last year and now have assumed the position of Area President and will be working to encourage all the men in the Bluebonnet Area to be active in the Men’s Ministries of their Churches. The men of FCC Burnet are making a name for themselves for their commitment to God and God’s work.

I am proud to be a member of such a great bunch of guys.      Ron Rosignol

A WORD FROM THE MODERATOR…

The Elders and Deacons, when meeting with their Care Groups, are encouraged to have intentional discussions of ideas and suggestions for our long term vision plan for First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Please take a look at the lists on the foyer wall regarding OUT reach, IN reach, and UP reach. These lists were made at the Elders/Deacons’ Retreat (money not being an issue!). Bring those ideas and suggestions (on paper) to me and/or Rev. Dawn and we will pass along to the Vision Team. This is a great tool to see where we are and, more importantly, where God is calling us to go! As I reported last month, we still have a vacancy for our Special Events chair, however, Sharon Tippie has graciously accepted coordinating the Easter Egg Hunt open to the youth of our community. Thank you, Sharon! Be ready for her call and be willing to share in this ministry! Continue to pray about filling this important vacancy.

This Lenten Bible Study follows Jonah on his journey of faith and at the same time reveals some very real Lenten concepts that guide us on our journey with Jesus on the way to the cross.

Meetings are Sundays at 5:00 pm or Thursdays at 2:00 pm. The last session will be combined on Sunday, March 28th. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to be a part of this study!

The church has arranged to purchase Easter lilies to be displayed in the sanctuary on April 4th. If you would like to designate one or more plants in honor of or in memory of someone, please fill out the form (found in the gathering area) and return it with payment of $7.00/plant by March 29th. Designants will be listed in the worship bulletin on Easter Sunday.

REUSABLE GROCERY BAGS
Are you remembering to use your grocery bags?? Every time you shop?? We have plenty on hand. See Dale or Judy Ritchie, Ron Rosignol or Debbie in the church office to buy more at $2.00 each. Let it be known that you participate at First Christian Church—and that ALL ARE WELCOME!

Scholarship
Applications
Scholarship applications are available in the church office. Completed forms are due by April 1st. The fund is set up for members of our church who are already enrolled or have been accepted in an accredited educational institution.

Our Easter Egg Hunt will be on Saturday, March 27 at 10:00 am. The men will serve a pancake breakfast beginning at 9:00 am (for donations). Remember to invite friends and neighbors to come join the fun. Please bring plastic eggs and candy to fill them.

Sound Booth Operators – Bennie, Steve, Bobby, and Ron. Thank you for your commitment to serve.

(FCC) is Off and Running!

Our first meeting for Friends Claiming Christ (FCC) was held Thursday, February 18. The children and youth were met with enthusiasm and love by the many volunteers. We had four children and seven youth/young adults who attended. Our scripture and activities focused on Jesus calling his first disciples to become Fishers of People. One of the ways the children and youth learned that they can “fish” is to invite friends to the next FCC meeting. Watch for our attendance numbers to grow!

Thanks to the many volunteers. From preparing and serving the delicious meal to the can collecting, everyone who helped was important in making this first meeting successful.

Our next FCC meeting is Thursday, March 25. I ask that you continue with your prayers for this venture to be a way for our children and youth to strengthen their relationship with God as they fellowship with friends. Please remember that FCC is open to all children in our community who are in grades one through twelve. Help us spread the word as we are all called by God to be Fishers of People!

Valentine Breakfast

The church men had a meeting,
And after hours of debate,
Decided to have a breakfast,
But what do we celebrate?

How about Valentine’s Day?
Someone called out,
And invite all the ladies;
They will love it, there’s no doubt.

What will we serve? Someone asked.
It will have to be a ladies’ dream;
Bacon, sausage, eggs, toast and jam,
Topped with strawberries and cream.

So Ron asked me to propose a toast
To you ladies who never get a perk.
You deserve a Valentine today
Because you do most of the work.

Susan’s Prayer

Lord, I have this friend, Susan,
Who plays piano, oh so well!
She plays in our church service
With notes as clear as a bell.

She plays the hymns we try to sing,
And she never misses a beat,
And keeping us all in tune
Is really quite a feat.

Well, Lord, she has a problem;
That’s why I’ve come to you.
They need to operate on her
And make her good as new.

It’s in her hands, Lord;
They just won’t work right.
This is why I beg of you
To keep her in your sight.

We will miss her for a time;
I pray it’s just for a while,
But when she plays again,
You will see old G. G. smile.
