Dawn reflections….
8/24/11
For the past several months, the Elders and I have been engaged in a study together about “Five Practices of Fruitful Congregations.” We wrap up the study this week and I want to share with you the study in a nutshell. How well a congregation attends to the five practices determines how fruitful the congregation is in “fulfilling the mission and purpose God has given them.” The author says that congregations fulfill God’s purpose by performing the five practices in an exemplary fashion. So what are the five practices? Well, here’s what the author says: “through Radical Hospitality, congregations reach out and offer the invitation and welcome of Christ; God shapes hearts and minds through Passionate Worship, creating a desire for closer relationship to Christ; through Intentional Faith Development, God’s Spirit helps people grow in grace and in the love of God and neighbor; maturing in Christ causes people to respond to the needs of others as they discern God’s call, which results in Risk-Taking Mission and Service; and as people continue to grow in grace, they place more of what they are and what they have under the lordship of Christ, practicing Extravagant Generosity.”
This is a challenge to all of us – to all participants in the church, not just to the church in general or to the leadership only. The challenge of fruitfulness is found all through scripture: from Genesis “be fruitful and multiply”; through Jesus’ teachings in all the Gospels, including in John where Jesus said “those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit”; to Revelation where the new creation in Christ includes the tree of life that produces fruit and leaves “for the healing of the nations” (our 2009 General Assembly theme).
How are we doing with these five practices, Church? Are we exemplary in all areas? If not, what can we do better? What will make our own lives and this congregation more fruitful for God? How can we be more hospitable (welcoming all and including all)? more passionate in worship (after all, none of us should be simply spectators)? more intentional about faith development (both our own and that of others)? more trusting in God by taking risks in mission and service (being creative and responsive to the needs of others)? more extravagant in our generosity (with both our financial offerings and the giving of our time and talents)?
There’s always room to grow, ways that we can be more faithful, opportunities to be more fruitful, areas that we can improve in sharing the love of Christ and connecting people to the gospel. Please join me in praying about the ministry we share, about what each of us (you and me) can do to help the congregation be exemplary in these five practices of fruitfulness.
Remember . . . we are the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ),“a movement for wholeness in a fragmented world.” And we are First Christian Church in Burnet “building relationships, growing faith, welcoming all in Jesus Christ.”
In grateful service for Christ,
Dawn

A WORD FROM THE MODERATOR…
Lots of shared information at the Board Meeting on August 10, 2011……. such as a report from Worship Arts Camp, visitor gifts being delivered, continued search for a nursery attendant and part-time music minister, plans for a proposed movable welcome center and padded seating near the front entrance under the windows, Dawn gave an informative overview of the Resolutions from the recent General Assembly, and Board approval for Monday’s Kitchen to continue through the end of the year when the Kitchen will be considered for inclusion in the budget as part of Outreach…….among other things! Things are “stirring” at FCC (DOC) Burnet………..perhaps the Spirit…….. Praise God from Whom all blessings flow!

Worship Arts Camp and Special Worship Service
Thanks to all who helped with Worship Arts Camp! It was a great week of Celebrating Jesus with wonderful, receptive children. We saw many familiar faces this year as well as new participants with an average attendance of 35 children each evening. The leaders, cooks, servers, and volunteers really pulled together as a church team to make this a very special experience for these children. I know that all of us who had the opportunity to meet and work with these children were truly blessed. Watching our youth and young adults teach sign language, clown ministry and interact with the children was yet another highlight of the week. I appreciate all of your prayers and support of this program.
God answered many, many prayers on Sunday morning and blessed the children, youth, congregation and visitors with a beautiful worship service. Two weeks later, I still find myself humming “Clap your Hands” and “Bread of Life”. It never fails to amaze me that our leaders start from the basics each year and within five days have taught the children the songs, signs, actions, produced art work to display and pulled all of this together into a worship service. What a joy to worship God with these children and youth!

Teachers Needed
Because of age differences and potential numbers for attendees, there is a need to create a third children and youth Sunday school class. What a positive issue to have! Please prayerfully consider your gifts and talents. Do you love children? Do you enjoy teaching? Is lively discussion on the Bible appealing to you? Do you enjoy teaching (and learning) through hands-on crafts and cooking projects? Would applying God’s word to the issues youth face today be a challenge you would like to tackle? These are just a few of the questions that you can ask yourself and if you have at least two “yes” answers, then do I have a deal for you!
If you are interested in the possibility of teaching, please see me as soon as possible. I will be happy to answer any questions or concerns that you might have. We would like to have rotation of teachers in place for the three age groups no later than the first of October. Thank you for your consideration of being a teacher and providing a positive influence in the lives of our children and youth.
Always a joy to serve with each of you,
Michele Darling
