Dawn reflections….                                                                                               1/25/12

Just this past Sunday, I had the honor of leading the installation of FCC Llano’s new pastor, Gretel Morgan. As I prepared for that service (and even during the service as I conducted the installation portion of the service and led the prayer with laying on of hands), I found myself reflecting back with fondness on my own installation here in 2007. As Pastor Gretel and I reflected the following day on her service, she said that, even though she couldn’t explain it, she felt different. Of course! It’s official now. She’s the called pastor of FCC Llano and they have affirmed that by installing her. That’s how I felt back in 2007. Called. Affirmed. Official. Grateful. Blessed. I could go on. What a wonderful feeling that was then – and continues to be today as I reflect again.

Doesn’t that describe each of us in our baptism? Every one of us has a calling from God. It doesn’t have to be a call to vocational ministry. Our baptism makes our call “official” in a sense. God affirms everyone’s call in one way or another, regardless of whether we receive affirmation from fellow human beings. How do we show our gratitude to God for claiming us, calling us, affirming us, blessing us? For me, it’s living out the call to ministry with integrity and faithfulness to God regardless of the obstacles and challenges that are presented along the way. What is it for you?

As we move through this new year, I encourage all of us to remember that we’re all called by God - to serve God. And we’re all called to serve God - together as Church. We may not always agree, but we can respectfully agree to disagree while still being Church together. So, let’s each explore ways that we can affirm each other, understanding the official nature of each of our callings. Find ways to extend gratitude to each other for the gifts we share in ministry. Be a blessing to each other and to others.

“Called” is the topic of our first week’s Lenten study in “Gospeled Lives”. Jesus calls us to follow. The church calls us to areas of service. I call us to share in the ministry with the love, grace and mercy that we all receive from God. Lent will begin soon. How will you be transformed by your journey with Jesus this Lenten season?

Humbled to be serving as your pastor,

Dawn

Building Relationships; Growing Faith; Welcoming All in Jesus Christ

MODERATOR…
Our 2012 ministry department chair-persons are off to a terrific start. In case you are not aware of who does what, here they are:

Worship    Ron Petrick
Education    Brenda Williams
Faith Sharing Michele Darling
Property Hank Holt
Outreach Lisa Nance
Hospitality          Bennie Clark
Membership Ann Knight
Disciples Men Rep. Bobby Moore
Disciples Women Rep. Susie Rodgers

Committees are being formed. Activities are being planned. If you have a special interest in one of those areas listed, please let the chair know. Your interest and participation will be welcome. If you don’t know what they do, ask them! Also, if you have pictures of church activities or interest in helping record church events for scrapbooks, please let Brenda Williams know. Wouldn’t it be great if every active member of our congregation agreed to serve in one of these areas! It is going to be a good year of serving together. I thank God for you!
                                              Judy

In keeping with our Vision Plan, Brenda Williams is preparing to assign Intergenerational Partners for the year. Let no one in our church be invisible because they are older and quiet or young and energetic! We become aware of the value of every person as we really get to know them. The hospitality committee, led by Bennie Clark, has ordered more seating for the Gathering Area. Michele Darling is planning our participation in the Bluebonnet Festival to make our presence known in the community. Disciple Women’s Ministry is meeting regularly, building enthusiasm for service, study and fellowship. Monday’s Kitchen continues to reach the community with food and other good things. This is not a comprehensive list but an affirmation that the church is following the vision……

“Gospeled Lives:
Encounters with Jesus”
by John Indermark
6-week Lenten Bible Study
led by Pastor Dawn
Cost is $7..50 for the book

Gospeled lives are lives profoundly affected by an encounter with Jesus Christ. Christ’s call leads to a continually unfolding story for each of us. Calls may be heard or neglected. Challenges may be taken on or passed up. Transformation may be embraced or avoided. In this book we meet New Testament individuals who heard Jesus speak a word about their life. Some responded with joy and gratitude. Some ignored or rejected his word to them. An encounter with the living Christ demands a response. How will you respond?

Let’s join together as Church for a light supper
and study during this Lenten season.
We’ll meet in the fellowship hall on
Thursdays at 5:30pm beginning Feb. 23rd.
Sign-up sheet on the information table.

DISCIPLES WOMEN’S NEWS

We had nineteen attend our January monthly meeting and breakfast. We have lots of ideas circulating and many ministry opportunities. We are working with the worship committee to re-supply the church nursery and have a list of items needed registered with JB's Teacher Supplies. Copies will be available Sunday.
There was a nice picture and newspaper article about our coat drive in conjunction with Monday's Kitchen. Thanks to everyone who donated, straightened, re-hung, and encouraged our visitors to find a warm coat.
We will have a Pampered Chef fundraiser beginning Feb. 1 and ending Feb 12, with 15% of sales being donated to us. See Susie for catalogs and order sheets. A party/demo event will be scheduled during this time so you can see the items in action.
Our next event is Saturday, February 11 when the men will serve us a Valentine breakfast and we will have a short meeting to follow. Keep your eyes and ears open for ideas where our Women's Ministry can serve our church and community.

DISCIPLES MEN'S NEWS

This will be my first newsletter article as President of the Disciples Men Ministries. I will be giving Roz a well deserved rest after all he has contributed to this Ministry.
Our group had its first men’s breakfast of the new year on Saturday, January 21st. We had a turn out of twelve. Dale and I ate enough for two more! We are truly blessed to have such a good cook as Ernie to keep us fat and sassy. Thanks to all who helped make this a great breakfast meeting.
We discussed the rent house project that Greg and his son just took over and left us all in awe with their excellent work and dedication on the project. There are jobs to be done to complete this project, and2:26 PM 2/4/2012 I’m sure we will get the help needed by such a great group of men.
We will celebrate our February men’s breakfast by serving breakfast to our favorite Valentines. That will be at 9:00am on Saturday, February 11th. Ladies, get ready to be spoiled.
Also in February the men’s retreat at DORC outside Gonzales will take place on the 17th and 18th. This is a good opportunity for all the men who are able to go to see first hand how our ministry works with all churches in the BBA. Registration forms are on the table in the kitchen area. First-timers are FREE, and we always carpool.

                            Bobby Moore, New President

We enjoy the music we are able to present to you and our constant prayer is that you, our church family, will be blessed and uplifted by its message. In a few weeks we will begin preparing for an Easter presentation. We would love to have just a few more voices for this event. Please consider joining us for this special time. Let me know if you're willing to help and I'll keep you posted when practices start.
                                           Susie Rodgers

As a member of the Worship Committee, I have been charged with evaluating the condition of the nursery, in regards to needed toys, supplies, and equipment, and cleanliness. I have spoken to our nursery attendant and have asked for her input.

The carpet is in need of cleaning, as there are stains on the floor. The cabinets and shelves are being cleaned and organized, and I have made a list of items that would enhance and improve the nursery. This list is being forwarded to the Disciples Women, as they expressed interest in making the nursery their next outreach project.

SASS-C Begins New Study
The Second Adult Sunday School Class (SASS-C) has begun a study of Jewish Foundations of Sacrifice, Worship and the Messiah. The class travels to the modern-day city of Jerusalem via video to hear intriguing discussions about the customs of Judaism that became the basis for the establishment of Christianity in the New Testament. Bible study and discussion are vital parts of the class. Additional class books are available, so come join us.

Is God's Spirit nudging you to become a disciple of Jesus and follow him into the waters of baptism?  If so, let's explore together what it me Christian!  Baptism is a significant moment in a person's life and has claim on us for the remainder of our Christian lives.  Therefore, as preparation for baptism I will be leading a Pastor's Class during the Lenten season: Sundays beginning February 26th, 4:00pm in the Parlor.  Please visit with me to make plans to begin this journey. A parent or guardian must participate along with their child(ren) in the Pastor's Class.

Church,
Thank you so very much for your thoughtful and generous "Love Offering". What a special Christmas present I received from you!  And what a special gift you are to me every day!  I'm on the search for a new white stole that I can wear during the Easter season and will apply your gift to that purchase.

With much gratitude for you and your gift,
      Pastor Dawn

Bluebonnet Area Assembly
April 27-28, 2012 at
First Christian Church San Marcos
Theme: “See! I am doing a new thing!”
(Isaiah 43:19)

Week of Compassion continues to focus on the ways “Sharing Brings Joy,” this year specifically on how “Sharing Brings Joy to Others.” Much of the time, our gifts bring joy to others through the tangible results of our sharing:
• A family displaced by natural disaster or political unrest is grateful to receive food, shelter, and the comfort of a safe place to begin to rebuild their lives.
• A woman who has had to walk miles to carry potable water for her family smiles as she draws water from a clean well near her home.
• A child excitedly arrives for the first day of class at her village’s new school.
Of course, when we “sow bountifully” by giving to others, we reap bountifully by sharing in the joy that our gifts bring to those whose basic needs are met through the important work of all our partners in service.
But in his second letter to the Corinthians, Paul reminds us of another way our giving brings joy to others. In encouraging the Corinthian church to give to the collection for the believers in Jerusalem, he reminds them that when the Jewish believers there receive gifts from their non-Jewish sisters and brothers, they will be moved not only by the gifts themselves, but also by the unity in Christ the gifts represent. Across social and economic lines that might have separated them, followers of Christ reached out to support one another. The awareness of another’s need allowed them to recognize their own abundance as a gift from God, one they were called to share. When we become aware of the needs of our extended global family, we are rescued from the fearful sense of scarcity our competitive culture of consumption can instill. We are awakened from the daydream of our isolation and reminded of all those around the world with whom, in the Spirit, we are one. Then we see others in need, not as recipients of our charity, but as sisters and brothers with whom we are called to share abundantly.
And the joy they experience from sharing in God’s abundance extends beyond the tangible expressions they receive. Knowing there are those who would share willingly with them, they are reminded of who they are: beloved children of the Creator, sisters and brothers of us all, each one a person of sacred worth.
This year, as you share your tithes and offerings with Week of Compassion, remember all the ways your gifts bring joy to others. Sow bountifully and share abundantly, knowing that you are not only helping change the statistics, you are also helping change lives. May we all give cheerfully and multiply the joy!

Week of Compassion Offering will be received February 19th and 26th
