Dawn reflections…. 4/27/08

As I write this, I am looking forward to the Spaghetti Benefit Luncheon, Area Assembly, the Summer Camp Program and a Mission Trip that I am working on putting together for us. I find that these many opportunities of coming together with a purpose as brothers and sisters in Christ are uplifting and very rewarding. It’s easy for us to get so internally-focused, so caught up in our own space, that we forget about Jesus’ call to be a global community. I invite everyone to be a part of one or more of the wonderful expressions of being church at FCC Burnet.

By the time you read this, both the Spaghetti Luncheon and Area Assembly will be a thing of the past. My prayer is that our outreach efforts will be met with great enthusiasm by the community around us as we seek to make a difference in the lives of local children and their families. I also pray that our area churches will respond in great numbers to the call to worship, serve and fellowship together as the larger church that is the Bluebonnet Area of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and to say good-bye to our Area Minister, John Callison, as he leaves us to begin a new chapter in his ministry.

And then there’s the summer. Look for many more opportunities to be church within our own faith community, in the local community around us and in the global community. Please share your suggestions. Have you told your faith story lately? Doing so can help someone to include the hope of Jesus Christ as a part of their life story.

SPREAD THE WORD ABOUT FCC IN BURNET!

Here is another opportunity to get our church’s name out in the community. An embroidered FCC logo is now available at XLR8-the store next to Terry’s Tees. You may bring in your own shirts, denim or golf, or purchase a shirt at XLR8. A logo will be embroidered on the shirt of your choice for a cost of $6.50 per shirt.
There are still eight FCC t-shirts available for the purchase price of $6.50. We have 1 small, 2 medium, 4 large, and 2 extra large. Ask Marilyn, if you are interested. If you need to contact them by phone, please consult your new Care Group listing or the church office.)

It‘s time to register! We have a least one car going from our church…and probably more than one. Talk to Eileen Santman, Judy Ritchie, Peggy Spiekermann or Marilyn Petrick if you are able to go. We’ll plan our room requests and car sharing. Information sheets and registration forms are in the church office and are available online at CCSW.org.

October 3-5 is the annual Bluebonnet Area Women’s Retreat at Gonzales. Ladies, if you don’t already have it on your calendar, put it on now!

SCHOLARSHIPS

On January 30, 1987, a scholarship fund was created for the purpose of assisting students who are members of the First Christian Church and will attend an accredited college or university. Since that time our church has presented 32 scholarships to 14 different recipients for a total of $27,255. Forms are now available for the 2008-2009 school year. If you will be enrolling in college and would like to receive an application, please contact Peggy Spiekermann.

A WORD FROM THE MODERATOR..

A special thanks to all of you who have helped with the spaghetti luncheon. I know that the Burnet Boys & Girls Club will receive great benefit from our donation. It has been wonderful to do the Lord’s work in a joyful way. Be looking forward to the summer and a special church wide fun event.

ANNUAL WORK DAY

RETREAT CENTER
This day is set aside to get camp cleaned and ready for the summer camping season. Volunteers are needed! Workday begins at 8am on Saturday. Lunch will be served free to all who participate. Call Dale Fowler at 830 857 1605 if you need more information.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL

We will participate in Vacation Bible School with First United Methodist Church again this summer. Dates have been set: June 16-20. A planning meeting will be held at the Methodist church on May 7th at 6pm. Volunteers who are willing to work with Vacation Bible School are urged to attend the planning meeting. Registration forms for the children are available now from our church office. Theme for VBS is related to a “Beach Party”, and decorating the church in preparation is set for Sunday, June 15th.

One half of the Pentecost Special Offering supporting new church ministry will remain in our region.
